Urban Vision and Achitectural Design Urban and Landscape Design Department
The Department was born with the objective to work on the whole universe of
urban experience. In this perspective, the department has created a training
project of excellence able to reflect on the changes and transformations of
the built space, promoting a permanent research activity for design models and
solutions that are appropriate and innovative.
The course
The growth of new urban landscapes has
determined a remarkable change in the organisation of the space: it is
no longer the concentrated city, but it is the territory, the landscape, the
container of everything. This new model of
contemporary city can be assimilated to an archipelago where each unit has its
own connotation, but where the social values as well as the activity
are strictly connected with the relations existing with the other units.
The Master specifically deals with: - Design quality, in terms of town planning and building trade;
- Coordination strategies for the
interventions of the decisional actors, with the creation of operative
and management structures based on innovative organisational models;
- The social quality of the planning proposals,
based on planning procedures and on innovative techniques regarding the
activation, guidance and listening of the participation;
- Optimisation of the financial resources,
both public and private, to obtain the operators’ interest;
- The
use of the right tools to create and communicate projects.
The course is based on learning through experience. Therefore, the students will
be guided in each phase to encourage a “learning by doing” approach.
Program
Beginning: September 2011
Duration: 12 months The Master in Urban Management and Architectural Design aims at developing professional competences able to overcome the old role, no longer adequate to face the theme of urban complexity. The course looks for appropriate solutions for a future-oriented “contemporary project” and it was born with the objective to work on the whole material produced by the urban experience. It is characterized by a solid teaching and cognitive structure that intends to develop training of excellence, able to reflect on the changes and transformations of the built space, by promoting a permanent research activity for adequate and innovative models and design solutions. The Master course lasts 12 months and starts in September. The first eight months of the course are focused on the teaching activity: the course starts with one-week orientation and team building, to organise competences, to set off the different backgrounds and to share everybody’s knowledge. During this week and during the year, there will be a set of theoretical interventions and technical visits to the big building sites both in Milan and in the most active Italian cities. This is followed by a series of lectures and workshops with the aim of updating the skills acquired by the students in their previous studies, bringing them towards a common vision of the problems related to the territory and to the architectures contained in it. A vision where city planning, architecture, design skills, social and anthropological analysis, communication and marketing tools converge in order to create a new professional identity able to newly depict the functions and aesthetics of the urban space. After the lectures and the workshops activity, the course plans a one-month Focus where the students are given the opportunity to broaden specific aspects focused on the themes of the Master thesis through meetings and professional experiences in the field. The Master Thesis will be developed during the last three months of the course, through research and project.
The reference themes of the Master are:
Policies: The ability to observe the territory in its overall complexity and its dimension of system: policies, laws, economics and finance; Vision and Strategies: the ability to analyse the important happenings on the urban territory and the tools to project these analysis into the future; Architectural Link: the ability to give shape and structure to design ideas, through the relation with the new cultural and multidisciplinary territories the project lives on; Communication: communication as guide and spine of the project, in order to gather energies and build consensus; Urban Management: the design and the broadened management of the territory and its functions; Architectural and Landscape Design: the design and the construction of the elements composing the territory Careers

Architectural Design offers several job or requalification opportunities:
